Today we would like to salute HM Royal Marines in their 350th year.

In 2014 the Corps of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines celebrate their 350th anniversary.  To commemorate this date, Royal Marines Commandos ski,'d, sailed, cycled, canoed and ran 6656km (circa 4136 miles). The aim was to encapsulate the Commando spirit and Corps values in a significant physical and mental challenge.

MY BOOKS

Here are 10 books from my bookshelf, some are genealogical and some are not, make of them as you will, they won't be to everyone's liking.

On arriving in Amenas we were brought up short, there not twenty yards away sitting motionless in the full sun, sat a latter-day Simple Simon, a youngish plumpish Frenchman, wearing nothing but a pair of swimming trunks and a little sailors hat, fishing in a plastic bucket with a rod and line ending in a hook, Neither in the bucket or anywhere else nearby was there any fish. The man did not look up as we passed and his collegues around the airstrip took not the slightest notice of him.

June was the preferred month, until school became important enough to interfere. My mother packed vast quantities of clothing in a big cabin trunk, which must have gone on ahead; it certainly didn’t come in the car with us. It took a good three hours to cover seventy odd miles to the coast.  Bypass was an almost unknown word and certainly wasn’t applicable to even the Essex county town of Colchester, the first time of two, that we went that way. One was built in the next couple of years but now some sixty odd years later has been virtually absorbed into
