If you want to discover the life of a shepherd in the mid 1800's on the Wiltshire Downs you should read W H HUDSON A Shepherds Life, the Bawcombe family were based on this LAWES family.
Winterbourne Bishop was/is Martin, now in Hampshire. Hudson didn't
want to reveal the identites of the people he wrote about there so he changed
the names and some of the family details. The main character who he calls
Isaac Bawcombe, was in fact William Lawes, bap. 1801. His second son "Joseph
Bawcomb" was William Lawes bap. 1824 - he got most of the material for the
book from this William in Mortimer West End on the Berkshire border where he
lived in the late 1800s
