MY BOOKS
This idea inspired by Tessa Keogh
Here are 10 books from my bookshelf, some are genealogical and some are not, make of them as you will, they won't be to everyone's liking.

NEW ENGLAND
Eyewitness Travel
ISBN 978-1-4053-1706-1

With snowy mountains in winter for skiing, temperate summers of blue skies and gentle breezes and an autumn set, ablaze by vivid foliage

New England is both a land for all seasons and for all senses.

KING ARTHUR IN SOMERSET
Rosemary Clinch & Michael Williams
ISBN 0-948158-25-5

Rosemary & Michael travel amongst the various Arthurian sites in Somerset and Avon, I visited the huge Cadbury Castle site way back in the summer of 1959, I was staying at North Cadbury Court and cycled across the valley one afternoon and climbed the massive ramparts of this vast hillfort, as Sea Vixen DH110 Navy aircraft roared overhead on their final approach to the nearby RNAS Yeovilton.

The large grassy top gave distant vistas to Glastonbury to the north-west  with Brent Knoll beyond, it is said that on a night of a full moon if you have the nerve to stay one can see the ghosts of Arthur and his Knights ride out, needless to say I did not, but if I had I'm certain I would have seen them as a dowser I have that sixth sense

THE PENGUIN DICTIONARY OF ARCHAEOLOGY
Warwick Bray & David Trump
ISBN 0-14051-045-1

This book has been written with the layman in mind, the many people who are aware of archaeology but have found difficulty in taking their interest further.

WHO'S FAMOUS IN YOUR FAMILY
Dr. John Tanner CBE FSA

Well who's famous in you family?

THE RIDGEWAY PATH
Nick Hill
ISBN 978-1-905864-40-9

The Ridgeway stretches 87 miles across five counties from Overton Hill near Avebury in Wiltshire to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire, the only bit I know is the Ivinghoe end.

This network of tracks passes through the counties of Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hertfordshire.

At the start you are imediately taken up onto the high ground wth views of the surrounding countryside stretching away to the horizon 40 or so miles away in most directions

THE HADRIANS WALL PATH
Henry Stedman
ISBN 978-1-905864-37-9

Thought by many as the northern frontier of the Roman empire Hadrians Wall stretches from the Solway Firth at Bowness to Wallsend at the mouth of the River Tyne where it enters the North Sea,

This guide not only gives the history, but tells the visitor how to get the best of your time here.

Collins Field Guide to ARCHAEOLOGY in Britain
Eric S Wood

One of the guides of its kind.

LIFE IN LAKES AND RIVERS
T T Macan & E B WORTHINGTON
ISBN 1-870630-29-7

The study of life in our lakes and rivers has been sadly neglected, and this athoritive book tells us of the fundermental problems that have been misunderstood, the majority of the public knowing surprisingley little about the subject, with anglers knowing just one side of it.
this book is just about as perfect in its field as a book can be.

Collins THE SEA SHORE
C M Yonge
ISBN 1-870630-24-6

The natural history of the sea shore is the best introduction to a general knowledge of the animal and plant kingdoms. As I live within 100 yards of the beach, this is a book I refer to again and again.

Collins Pocket Guide to the SEA SHORE
C M Jonge & John H Barrett

Hardly a pocket guide unless you have big pockets but is a good identification guide to shells, sea-anenones fish, crabs, starfish, sponges and seaweed and i am a regular visitor to it's pages.

Today we would like to salute HM Royal Marines in their 350th year.

In 2014 the Corps of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines celebrate their 350th anniversary.  To commemorate this date, Royal Marines Commandos ski,'d, sailed, cycled, canoed and ran 6656km (circa 4136 miles). The aim was to encapsulate the Commando spirit and Corps values in a significant physical and mental challenge.

Today, we'd also like to salute

North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland Welcome to the Laws Family Register.   A Child of  the Twenties A suburban childhood of the Twenties  seen from the Ninteen Nineties by my late father John Robert Laws 1921-2008 Part 16 Holidays 1, Holidays at that time meant the seaside, and the seaside meant the East Coast, Sunshine, East winds sand, and an icy grey sea. June was the preferred month, until school became important enough to interfere. My mother packed vast quantities of clothing in a big cabin trunk, which must have gone on ahead; it certainly didn’t come in the car with us. It took a good three hours to cover seventy odd miles to the coast.  Bypass was an almost unknown word and certainly wasn’t applicable to even the Essex county town of Colchester, the first time of two, that we went that way. One was built in the next couple of years but now some sixty odd years later has been virtually absorbed into
