Welcome to the Laws Family Blog

We reach out to all, regardless of Race, Colour, Creed, Gender & Orientation, or National Origin, with support for researching family history and documenting cultural inheritance.

Dear Ancestor,-
Your tombstone stands amongst the rest, neglected and alone
The names and dates are chiseled out on polished marble stone
It reaches out to all who care, it is too late to mourn
You did not know that I exist, you died and I was born
Yet each of us are cells of you, in flesh, in blood, in bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse entirely not our own
Dear Ancestor,
The place you filled one hundred years ago
Spreads out amongst the ones you left, who would have loved you so,
I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot, and come to visit you.

Shepherd Lawes

The village of Martin, at the furthest western reaches of Hampshire, has, like so many border settlements see-sawed between Wiltshire and Hampshire. Its beautiful situation on the western downland with chalk at its feet is perfect sheep country and therefore to find the grave of a shepherd is not an unusual thing.

Shepherd Lawes
Grave of Shepherd Lawes Martin Hampshire

Shepherd Lawes however is. For those who live on the chalk of Hampshire, Wiltshire or Dorset, the writing of W.H Hudson ‘A Shepherd’s Life’ is a welcome reminder of a time when the slopes were covered in a fine grassland with a precious and bountiful flora and full of sheep.
The plough had not yet pushed its way through the greensward to reveal the bare bones of white chalk.
Hudson’s tale of the life of the shepherd, Caleb Bawcombe, his father, Issac Bawcombe and his family is based on the life of Shepherd Lawes. Hudson was not a native of Britain, his home was Argentina where he spent his time wandering the Pampas. He wrote the book a handful of years before the outbreak of WWI which is a narrative thrown back even further in time, to the early decades of the 19th century and the life of a shepherd on the Wiltshire Downs as related by his son, Caleb. Caleb is an old man himself as he relates the story of his life and that of his father before him. His account meanders through his memory and Hudson as the writer, allows it to find its own course. The result, a gentle observation of life through the quiet eyes of one who spends hours observing nature, the shepherd.

Shepherd William Lawes

The headstone tells us that his descendants have restored the stone and added a plaque telling us that William Lawes was the shepherd 'Issac Bawcombe' who Hudson based his book upon. He died in December 1886, aged 96 years, a fine age and is buried with his wife Mary who died the year before. In the book, Caleb his son describes him as a fine specimen of a man, both physically and morally, a stalwart of a man whose very presence was both commanding and reassuring

Lord, help me dig into the past
and sift the sands of time
That I might find the roots that made
This family tree of mine
Lord, help me trace the ancient roads,
On which my father's trod
And led them through so many lands
To find our present sod.
Lord, help me find an ancient book
Or dusty manuscript,
Thats's safely hidden now away
In some forgotten crypt
Lord, let it bridge the gap that haunts
My soul, when I can't find
The missing link between some name
That ends the same as mine

North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland Welcome to the Laws Family Register.   A Child of  the Twenties A suburban childhood of the Twenties  seen from the Ninteen Nineties by my late father John Robert Laws 1921-2008 Part 16 Holidays 1, Holidays at that time meant the seaside, and the seaside meant the East Coast, Sunshine, East winds sand, and an icy grey sea. June was the preferred month, until school became important enough to interfere. My mother packed vast quantities of clothing in a big cabin trunk, which must have gone on ahead; it certainly didn’t come in the car with us. It took a good three hours to cover seventy odd miles to the coast.  Bypass was an almost unknown word and certainly wasn’t applicable to even the Essex county town of Colchester, the first time of two, that we went that way. One was built in the next couple of years but now some sixty odd years later has been virtually absorbed into
