He woke
suddenly to Emma shaking him.
“Dad, Wake up.” she said gently,
“You've been asleep for hours its past eleven o'clock, and I want to ask you
something before I go to bed, and something else, I've a message for you from
Mum.”
“What is it?” He said, rubbing his
eyes, and as he did so, he saw that Emma was in her dressing gown and ready for
bed.
“Firstly, Mum says her train will get
into Tregorran Junction at ten o’clock tomorrow, and we're not to be late, ---
or there'll be trouble!” she then added with a little giggle. “Just joking,
Dad.”
“Secondly
I've been upstairs watching the river and there's lots of lights, can you come
& explain what they all mean.”
“Ok! Let's go and see.” Robert replied
as he turned to follow Emma who was already climbing the narrow stairs to her
room at the top of the house.
At one end of
her room, was a bow-fronted window that looked out over the river in all
directions.
“Now what am I supposed to be looking
at.” He said, making himself comfortable on the window box.
“Look there.” Emma said, pointing into
the blackness, do you see it?”
Robert looked and saw nothing
unfamiliar. “Just the red & green navigational lights showing the channel”
“No” Emma said, “Look there, higher
up, someone's flashing a light.” and then she pointed seawards. “Look someone
is flashing back.”
“I do believe you're right."
Robert said, “I wonder who they are, and what they are up to.” As the light
twinkled from the clifftop, across the inky black water.
“Right young lady, time you got some
sleep.” He pulled back the blankets and added. “I’ll pop in later and tuck you
in.” Robert said.
When he did
some 15 minutes later, Emma was sound asleep.
